Role and Responsibilities

  • Land Use Identification: Work alongside the Chief Planning Officer to identify and evaluate university land for potential affordable housing projects.

  • Land Acquisition Assistance: Support the identification of potential site partners, participate in research, and assist in preliminary negotiations.

  • Planning Policy Research: Conduct research and analysis on applicable planning policies, such as official plans, zoning by-laws, and the Ontario Planning Act.

  • Development Applications: Assist in preparing planning reports and materials for project business plans and development applications.

  • Land Use Planning Support: Provide assistance in preparing proposals for Official Plan Amendments, Zoning By-Law Amendments, Minor Variance applications, and Site Plan Approvals.

  • Community Research and Consultations: Coordinate and support student unions in community engagement efforts, including consultations and stakeholder communication.

  • Coordinate the production of communication materials - social media (Instagram, Linkedin, Facebook, TikTok), electronic newsletters, website text, videos, photos, print materials (posters, leaflets, brochures, signage, event materials), Canva Pro templates, media releases, correspondence, presentations, etc.

  • Write and/or design (or working with a Copywriter and/or Graphic Designer) communication materials.

  • Maintain brand standards and enforce style guidelines in all communications mediums.

  • Oversee the distribution of marketing materials including electronic newsletters, posters, brochures, event signage, etc.

  • Document events with videos, photography and social media posts.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of communication strategies, materials and tools to build awareness of the Organization and our programs.

  • Garner press and publicity for the Organization, its people, events and initiatives, through sending out press  releases, submitting stories to press outlets, and soliciting journalists, freelance journalists and student writers to write about the Organization, its people, events and projects. 

  • Ensure the Organization’s website is up-to-date, and all links are working.

  • Create, execute, monitor and evaluate social marketing campaigns.

  • Routinely monitor the Organization’s engagement (web, social media, electronic newsletter) and online presence on relevant online communities and websites.

  • Liaise and collaborate with others as necessary to support their communication needs.

  • Coordinate the Organization’s speaking engagements and media appearances.

Member Services Assistance

  • Aide in recruitment and interviews of new potential residential co-operative members. 

  • Help facilitate the move-in/move-out process by preparing documentation and assisting with inspections.

  • Assist with member inquiries, directing them to appropriate resources or officials as needed.

Administrative Support

  • Maintain up-to-date files on member units, maintenance schedules, and contact lists for contractors.

  • Monitor and respond to maintenance-related correspondence in the housing co-operative's email system.

  • Prepare reports and summaries for maintenance projects or Board updates.

Board and Stakeholder Communication

  • Assist in preparing materials for Board meetings, particularly related to maintenance and repair updates.

  • Liaise with contractors, suppliers, and other service providers as required.

  • Work alongside the executive team to identify funding goals and opportunities.

  • Writing, proofreading and submitting grant applications with a high degree of language proficiency.

  • Maintaining a grants database that clearly identifies grants that will be applied to, are in the process of being written, and have been submitted. The database should also indicate funding that was granted and applications that were not accepted.

  • Receive feedback from granting bodies if applications are not accepted. Re-apply with feedback or use feedback in future grant applications for ongoing improvement and skills development.

The Community Organizer will support several initiatives in engaging community members alongside other HOUSE team members, primarily engaging post-secondary students on the issue of affordable housing for students through education, community consultation, organizing and volunteer engagement.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Act as the liaison between HOUSE, local student union(s), post-secondary institutions, local government officials, community organizations and the real estate sector.

  • Reach out to community members (municipal, provincial/territorial, university administrations, student unions, indigenous stakeholders and elders, etc.) through a variety of means to facilitate the development of partnerships and collaborative sponsorships that can advance the case for affordable student housing.

  • Oversee all community engagement, outreach and housing education activities on campus, including postering, informational tabling, leafleting, public consultations and workshops.

  • Event planning and organizing, including room booking, ordering A/V equipment and refreshments, promotion of the event, preparing and erecting event signage, booking speakers (if required), preparing presentation or materials (if required).  Examples of events could include: housing consultations, housing rights workshop, community meal, deputations in support of housing at City Hall, housing rally, public town hall, housing information session.

  • Plan and help run community engagement opportunities, such as interviews, workshops, and consultations using a cultural competency framework, anti-oppression lens and informed consent. Present your findings to a large range of audiences, including HOUSE team members, stakeholders, and community members.

  • Documenting all events, including taking notes, videos and photos. 

  • Scheduling meetings, and taking clear/concise minutes for all meetings [consider multiple staff calendars when scheduling meetings, keep executive schedules updated by adding Google Calendar events, maintaining digital organization of meeting minutes in HOUSE and affiliates’ drives].

  • Assist in the production of local print, web and social media materials for the campus.

  • Maintain social media for the local campus. 

  • Conduct primary research in the form of surveys, focus groups, and interviews to inform datasets and report writing.

  • Conduct secondary research in the form of searching for research and newspaper articles, public records, and census data usage to inform datasets and report writing.

  • Recruiting, training and on-boarding new volunteers.

  • Create and manage relationships with community organizations, respond to partnership and collaboration opportunities, and provide consistent updates and information to these organizations.
