About Us
Founded in 2019 HOUSE aims to mobilize social finance tools designed to fund co-operative housing projects.
HOUSE is a Canadian Non-Profit student housing developer company that helps build affordable housing residences on University Campuses.
HOUSE follows a tried and tested building model inspired by the Quebecois based company UTILE.
HOUSE works as an intermediary manager between student unions and developers to build this housing and directs the process from beginning to end. Students now have the ease of mind that their next residence is protected from rising rents, greedy landlords, and can have high quality living at a young age.
HOUSE Stands for Housing Our University Students Equitably. HOUSE is committed to creating projects that facilitiate the creation of co-operative communities.
Three Intersections of Action
HOUSE works within the framework of three intersections that make our projects fruitful and successful. HOUSE team members commit to research, advocacy and development.
RESEARCH
HOUSE provides research services to post-secondary institutions by gathering primary data in the form of surveys, stakeholder consultations, and ongoing community conversations. We gather data relating to current student housing concerns, potential sites for future developments, and market rental rates and conditions.
ADVOCACY
HOUSE advocates for Canadian students in both individual and institutional capacities. Using our research findings, we advocate for increased affordable student housing resources from municipal, provincial, and federal governments, tenant and housing rights, and increased development of affordable student housing.
Based on Quebec-based student housing developer UTILE’s proven development model, HOUSE is working alongside post-secondary student unions across Canada to develop affordable student housing. HOUSE staff members aid student unions in creating housing committees to help advocate for student housing to their post-secondary institutions. These committees then run levy referenda, and the resulting funds are used to fill the gap in financing toward building affordable student housing.
